Beauty on the Blackstone
In a quiet corner of Cumberland overlooking the Blackstone River, molten glass glows orange inside a furnace as artists shape delicate pieces by hand, turning heat and patience into works of art.
At the center of it all is Blackstone River Glass Studio, a locally owned glassblowing studio that will host a fundraiser June 6 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., bringing together artists, supporters and community members for an evening along the river.
During a recent visit to the studio, owner Rebecca, better known as “Becca,” welcomed guests with the kind of warmth that immediately set the tone.
“Make yourself feel like home,” she said.
Inside the studio, long metal rods slid in and out of blazing furnaces as glowing glass was shaped and twisted into intricate designs. Artists carefully rotated molten pieces while preparing specialty VIP glasses being created specifically for the fundraiser.
The process itself appeared equal parts craftsmanship and choreography. Heated glass shifted from bright orange to deep reds and blues as workers moved between furnaces, worktables and cooling areas with practiced precision.
Finished pieces lined shelves throughout the studio, showcasing colorful handblown ornaments and decorative glasswork in vibrant greens, blues and purples.
Beyond the artwork, the location itself may be one of the studio’s biggest attractions. Nestled along the Blackstone River, the property offers sweeping views of the water and surrounding trees, creating a peaceful backdrop for both artists and visitors.
Outdoor seating areas overlook the river, giving the space the feel of a hidden creative retreat tucked inside northern Rhode Island.
The June 6 fundraiser is expected to feature a silent auction, live glassblowing demonstrations, raffles, food trucks, drinks and fire dancing performances throughout the evening. Live music will also be provided by Rhode Island band Take It to the Bridge.
Organizers hope the event will not only support the studio, but also introduce more Rhode Islanders to the artistry and technical skill behind glassblowing.
For Blackstone River Glass Studio, the fundraiser represents more than a community event. It is an opportunity to showcase local art, connect with visitors and celebrate creativity in one of Cumberland’s most unique settings along the riverfront.
